Otherworldly evening
Otherworldly evening
By Gordana Pešaković
In the air are hints of summer and ease, with the anticipation of the last symphony concert of the season.
Next to the library, several people of more modest means in conversations and with music. A woman with lively, curious eyes and a voice which echoes with experience addresses me, ‘My lady, you have such a beautiful necklace.’ With a smile, I thank her with words and a bow.
I reach the Opera House. Lots of nicely dressed people, relaxed in conversation. I'm starting to circle the block because there's still time before the concert starts. I'm going down the street. In front of a restaurant, a couple had just finished their dinner. They are standing. My gaze meets the woman's. She is my age or a little younger. Friendly looking and cheerful. She is holding a rose in her hand. 'This rose is for you! I wish you a pleasant evening! The man looks at us with a smile and a friendly warmth. I say thank you with a smile and a glimmer of joy in my eyes.
What a start to the evening! And then came the concert, with applause and joy from all present. I don't remember that the audience has ever greeted a conductor with so much love, gratitude, and joy - month after month, concert after concert, from November to May, without stopping.
I look at the sky, with gratitude for the existence of beauty and goodness in all of us and the hope that closeness will overcome fear!
